The ERD (In the Search for Development by its acronym in Catalan) is an advisory project for high school research projects promoted by Escola Lluire El Sol and the Assemblea de Cooperació per la Pau (Cooperation for Peace Assembly). In Teleduca we had the task of accompanying and helping the students draw up an audiovisual map on leisure and/or social entities that were run by young people in the district of Ciutat Vella.
Starting from the dynamic of sharing their previous ideas and concerns, we discovered that they had the initial impression that there were difficulties in the district for the self-management of
projects for young people, and that there was little public space and few spaces in which young people could carry out activities. They mainly thought that the entities would not be representative of all of the youth in the neighbourhood.
One of their main concerns was coming up with how to reach young people who, whether for economic, cultural, religious reasons, etc., do not come into these spaces, and how to break the stigma.
Due to the interest shown by the female students when researching these aspects, which at first went beyond the idea of the mapping of entities proposed initially, we decided to look for a way in which this information could be present in the maps. For this reason, we suggested they produce chronicles of each visit, where they could reflect in
greater depth and from their own point of view everything they had researched about the entity.
We believe that this decision was very wise and encouraged the empowerment of these young women, because they were able to carry out the research according to their interests and allowed them to generate connections with similar entities and people. Once the project was finished, and after listening to the young people present the cartography made in public, we can say that the participants went from having many doubts about the project to making it their own, working in groups and getting actively involved in each and every one of the steps.
The challenge of using geolocation and audiovisuals as their main tools was
easily accepted. The girls valued very positively what they learned from this experience and were proud of the blog and the resulting cartography of their work.
