Climb up wherever you are. Your path is like a scrapbook, a handful of pages to revisit, decisions made, inadvertent high scores and lucky mistakes. What factors have brought you to where you are?

Orbital Logbooks allows you to browse through a collage of impressions that ten professionals from the field of education have collected over the course of a year in their field journals.

The journey is an infinite, circular itinerary, which we encourage you to follow as you like so that you lose yourself in the different stages that make up the landscape of empowerment.

Orbital logbooks
Empowerment is a continuous, infinite journey. The circle you will see next aims to be its representation. In it are situated, in the form of coloured circumferences, the different stages of the empowerment process that ten professionals in the field of education have defined with their thoughts and reflections. By selecting them, you will be able to see what stage they refer to and you will discover the materials made to describe it.

The different colours correspond to three types of resources:
The green circumferences contain pages from field journals.
The orange ones, audio-visual pieces on specific topics, recorded by the educators themselves.
The yellow ones contain fragments of four focus groups where participants shared experiences.

Through these materials, you will be able to delve into the meaning of a term as abstract and multifaceted as that of youth empowerment; circulating through its stages, from prior reflection to the evaluation of the results obtained.

In the menu on the top right, you can learn more about the project and also access an archive of the materials, where you can filter them by specific concepts and interests.
This page has been elaborated following the recommendations of the use of non-sexist language. Therefore, as far as possible, we have used generic expressions that include gender diversity.

"My name is Lluís Rubió and I live in the region of La Garrotxa, specifically in Olot. I am someone who is very involved in my town’s social movements and I find it very difficult to just stand back and not act in the face of an injustice, especially those that affect people.

I stand politically on the left of the left, and I guess that’s why I tried to make headway on this issue by studying a Diploma in Social Education.

I have been working in the field of youth for more than ten year and I have done it and I still do it from different positions and places: from the judicial system to leisure. I currently work as an Education and Youth Expert at La Vall d'en Bas Town Council.”

The Radio

One of the first proposals that I suggested when I started working as a youth technician in Vall d’en Bas was to do a radio programme conducted and organized by the youth of the Valley. This proposal originated for various reasons and had several objectives.

One of the things I wanted to achieve was a rejuvenation and renewal of the local radio, which, until then, was lacking its own production and did not encourage the participation of new and young voices. Moreover, my intention was to make young people aware of this means of communication. We live in the world of communication and it is

important for the youth to know what media is at their disposal. For me, the radio is one of the most powerful media and it also allows us to work on values that cannot be worked on from other resources. For example: in this medium we can work on referentiality, but not referentiality understood as “Me, Lluís, a reference for young people” – but referentiality as in the kids starting to see that they can be a referent themselves. Through a microphone and their voice, they are explaining things to other people who are listening, believing, understanding… In this sense young people become aware of having a certain power, a certain critical capacity and a role in the world and in the community of their town. In order to work on empowerment, I think it’s essential that young people see that they can be

referents of something. Young people already have power, but maybe not enough opportunities or enough awareness to hold it.

The radio programme is designed by the youth, so they have to prepare it and come in having written and worked on everything they want to say. This task requires the work of several days of preparation, organization and forethought, as well as the need to be informed so as not to spread false information. I believe that everything they work on in the programme, they then end up applying and transferring to their daily routine and the relationships and commitments they establish with others.

The way I see it, young people need to

feel a part of the social life of their municipality. This way, they also begin to form part of adult life. When they participate in actions that go beyond what we usually organise in the youth sphere, society becomes democratised, and young people are taken into account. Sometimes we only remember about them when they “break a glass playing ball” or “smoke joints wherever”; but we don’t take them into account as people with critical spirit who live in the municipality and have things to say.
